Public Warned Against Playing Loud Music Or Else….

Bandar Seri Begawan - It is an offence to play music loudly in the Sultanate and offenders could be fined and jailed.

Under Section 20 of the Minor Offences Act, it is prohibited to play noisy instruments within the limits of any town or village between 11 pm and 6 am or in any public road at any hours without the written permission of the Commissioner of Police.

This was reiterated by the Criminal Investigation Department in a press statement following complaints by the public on noisy neighbourhoods.

Offenders can be fined B$500 and the police are allowed to give warning to stop the noise either by removing the instruments or by dispersing people assembled there.

It is also stated that the behaviour of provoking the breach of peace can be dealt with under Section 30 of the Public Order Act. Offenders of the Act are liable to an imprisonment of 3 months and a fine of B$500.

The public has been advised, especially those who have been granted permission by the police to organise functions, to abide by the conditions set out in the permits.

They are also advised not to disturb their neighbours by playing loud music beyond 12 midnight.

The Borneo Bulletin has received several complaints from members of the public of certain family events such as marriages or birthday parties where music has been played loudly well beyond midnight.

The police also reminded the public to refrain from hanging around outside certain commercial complexes in the late hours while playing loud music from their cars or using their mini compo sets.

The press release also stated that police will take necessary actions according to the country's laws to prevent any breach of peace.

The public has been advised to be considerate and not to create any disturbances or dangers to their neighbours or to others who frequently visit commercial complexes. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
